The Crocodile and The Monkey

Long ago, a large river flowed through a dense forest. A family of crocodiles lived in that river. A clever monkey lived on a tree on the riverbank. The tree bore very sweet berries.

The crocodile would seek shelter from the sun under the shade of the tree. One day, the crocodile saw the monkey sitting on the tree, eating berries. The monkey thought, “This crocodile comes here every day. Why don’t I make friends with him?”

The monkey plucked some sweet berries and gave them to the crocodile. The crocodile ate them and found them delicious. He began coming every day, and they became good friends.

A few days later, the crocodile fed the berries to his wife. After eating the berries, the crocodile’s wife said, “If the berries are so sweet, how sweet must the monkey be who eats them every day! I want to eat his heart.”

Listening to his wife’s words, the crocodile began to think. He didn’t want to harm his friend, but at his wife’s insistence, he devised a plan.

The next day, the crocodile said to the monkey, “Friend, my wife wants to see you. She’s calling you home.”

The monkey was delighted and began crossing the river on the crocodile’s back. When they reached the middle of the river, the crocodile told the truth: his wife wanted to eat the monkey’s heart.

The monkey wasn’t frightened. He immediately showed his cleverness and said, “Friend! Why didn’t you tell me earlier? I left my heart on the tree. Let’s go back and get it.”

The crocodile was convinced and brought him back to the shore. As soon as they reached the tree, the monkey immediately jumped up and climbed up.

The monkey called out from above, “Stupid crocodile! Does anyone ever leave their heart? You broke a friendship. I’ll never trust you again.”

The crocodile realized his mistake and, ashamed, went back into the river.
