The Tortoise and The Geese

Once, a tortoise and two swans lived in a pond. The three of them were very good friends and lived happily together for many years.

Some time later, a drought struck the region. All the rivers and ponds began to dry up. People and animals started to perish. The swans decided to leave the place and fly to another location where food and water were abundant. When they went to bid farewell to the tortoise, he pleaded with them not to leave him behind.

The Tortoise and the Geese

The swans said, “Dear friend, we, too, do not wish to leave you behind during these difficult times. However, unlike you, we cannot survive for long without food and water. If only you could fly, you could come along with us.”

But the tortoise could not fly.

He continued to plead with the swans to take him along.

Eventually, the swans agreed. They said to the tortoise, “Your jaws are very strong. We have devised a plan, but it is extremely dangerous. You must do exactly as we tell you. If you do not heed our instructions, you will surely perish.”

The Tortoise and The Geese

Overjoyed, the tortoise agreed without even listening to the full details.

They brought a stick. The swans grasped both ends of the stick with their beaks, while the tortoise clamped his jaws around the middle section. The sole condition was that the tortoise must not speak at all; otherwise, he would fall from the stick and die instantly.

The tortoise knew that this plan was fraught with danger. Nevertheless, he did not want to be left behind. He promised to remain silent throughout the entire flight.

The Tortoise and the Geese

Carrying the tortoise with them, the swans began to soar high into the sky. They flew over hills, fields, and a village

. As they flew over the village, people began to clap and shout, “Look! What an amazing sight! The swans are carrying a tortoise!” People were pointing at him and watching in astonishment. The tortoise unable to restrain himself—
and filled with delight—he shouted, “Look at me! I am flying!”

The very moment he uttered these words, the stick slipped from his mouth; he plummeted to the ground from that great height and died.
